Lawrence Township is the northeast corner of Marion County, running from about 38th Street north to 96th Street and east to the Hancock County line. More than 120,000 people live here. About two-fifths of the township is the City of Lawrence, home to the former Fort Benjamin Harrison, historic Oaklandon and Indian Lake. The rest is part of Indianapolis, including most of Castleton, the I-69 and Fall Creek corridor and much of the Marion County side of Geist Reservoir. That gives buyers real range in one township: 1950s ranches, older wooded neighborhoods, 1990s subdivisions, new construction and lake homes, mostly within Lawrence Township schools.
Living in Lawrence Township
Green space is a big part of life here. Fort Harrison State Park, 1,700 acres on land that was once part of Fort Benjamin Harrison, has trails and fishing along Fall Creek and an 18-hole golf course, and Lawrence’s Fort Ben Cultural Campus hosts concerts and shows around the historic Theater at the Fort. To the west, Skiles Test Nature Park has more than 80 acres of trails with a link to the Fall Creek Greenway, and Sahm Park near 91st Street adds a golf course, disc golf and courts. Castleton Square handles big shopping trips, and Pendleton Pike carries everyday shopping through Lawrence. In the northeast, the Marion County shoreline of Geist Reservoir brings lake living, while Oaklandon, founded along the railroad in 1849, keeps a small historic district.
